Turmeric, Black (Curcuma longa caesia)

Native to northeast India, Black Turmeric has amazing blue colored rhizomes with an agreeable odor, but intense flavor (reminiscent of turpentine). It has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and folk medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is sometimes used in religious ceremonies in South Asia. It is a valued ornamental plant and is increasingly used in the cosmetic and herbal supplement industries.  Black turmeric thrives in warm, humid climates and prefers rich, well-draining soil.

Harvesting: Rhizomes are ready to harvest after 8-10 months, when the leaves begin to yellow and die back.

Potency: Black turmeric is considered potent. It is recommended to use it sparingly. Consuming high doses may lead to stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea.
